Tim Allen Hints at ‘Toy Story 5’ Writer

Now that both the writers’ and actors’ strikes are over, the talk shows are getting back on schedule – and thanks to Tim Allen having a new season of The Santa Clauses on Disney+ to promote right now, he made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night. We can usually count on Allen to mention Toy Story whenever there’s a new project in the works, and he didn’t disappoint!

Host Jimmy Fallon asked during the interview if there was in fact going to be a Toy Story 5. This was Allen’s response:

“One of the original creators of one of the series – I don’t want to drop his name. Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on; he actually said that it was gonna happen. They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it. What it is, for people like me – it’s just like, I’m a sci-fi buff – and you wonder if four was too many, is five gonna be too much? And according to the scuttlebutt, the writer that’s doing it wrote one of the better ones, and he said, ‘if I didn’t get this right, I wouldn’t do it.’ So it could be a very, very interesting way to reunite it.”

You can watch the video of it here, starting at roughly 4:35:

The mention of “one of the original creators” as well as the writer of “one of the better ones” really has me intrigued. Since it’s not clear whether he’s referring to the original story writers who come up with the initial treatment for the film, or the screenwriter who is responsible for the final script, I’m going to refrain from sharing any sort of personal theories. But as always, these tantalizing little clues he throws out there will keep me guessing and sleuthing until he or Tom Hanks (or someone else, even) lets the next little bit of info slip. Hopefully it won’t be too long before that happens!
