New ‘Toy Story 4’ Posters and Merchandise Reveal Both Old and New Characters

I’m quickly learning that all the best treasures come from other countries, as far as Toy Story 4 news goes.  I’ve got two new poster images to share today, along with a few small images of merchandise – both featuring old and new characters, some of which we haven’t gotten a clear glimpse of yet!

Posters

The most exciting (at least for me!) reveal was the new movie poster by Disney France.  The best thing about this poster?  Old friends!  In it, we finally see Jessie, Rex, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head,  Slinky, Hamm, and one of the Aliens, for the first time since the teaser trailer back in November.  Bullseye and Mr. Pricklepants are also included – they hadn’t been seen in the teaser at all.

New characters are in it as well.  We already know Forky, and Ducky and Bunny – but take a look at Bo’s shoulder.  There’s our first real look at Giggles McDimple, her little friend whose name has only been found in merchandise lists so far.  She doesn’t seem to be wearing the sunglasses here, as depicted in the toy image, although it’s hard to tell when she’s so tiny.  This poster also highlights the ferris wheel at the carnival, and I’m looking forward to seeing what role that particular ride plays in the story.

The second poster was released yesterday for the Lunar New Year, and was shared in two different formats.  This version was posted on social media by Disney Hong Kong:

Another was shared on Disney Malaysia’s Instagram account:

All three of these new posters utilize stock images – you can see similarities between most of the characters poses and expressions, with only Woody being the most markedly different in the French and Lunar New Year posters.  I’d expect that these are the images we’ll be seeing on merchandise, books, and displays as marketing for the movie really kicks into gear.  And we should be getting an official updated poster – instead of just the teasers that have been released – for the American market in the coming months.

Merchandise

I wish I had the same quality photos of these things to share as the posters, but with all these early sneak peeks of new things, we have to take the images as they’re available, which is usually pretty low-res.  This time, they come from a German site called das Spiel, which seems to be a toy website.

First, on a listing for pretty inconspicuous Mondo bouncy balls, we get our first glimpse of Duke Caboom – and Bo’s sheep!

Another listing for Nicotoy plushes shows an absolutely adorable Bo Peep.

There are also some remote-control toys, made by Dickie Spielzeug, that are marked with “reference only,” suggesting they may still be prototype images.  We’ve got Buzz in a spaceship

Buzz riding RC

Woody riding RC

Duke Caboom on his motorcycle

and here’s the surprising one.  A skunk

Are the toys going to have a run-in with a skunk on the carnival grounds?  And does this inclusion of RC mean he’s back, or is it just more nostalgia?  He seems to be making too many appearances in merchandise at this point to be just a coincidence, but I guess we’ll see.

Lastly, there’s a list of Hot Wheels car names that are very intriguing.  While there aren’t any images, here are the titles:

I’ve seen Pony-Up and Bully Goat before, as well mention of a speedway.  Is there a race scene in the movie?  Or are these cars simply inspired by new toys we haven’t met yet?

Each day brings us closer to more Toy Story 4 news – and hopefully that trailer!  Stay tuned, I’ll be sure to share as soon as I hear or discover anything!

    Awesomeness!!!

I have a question for you!
Do you think the original script of whose 3/4 of it was discarded, will ever be revealed ??

Probably not. The Art of Toy Story 4 book may mention plot points that changed, though, so we might get to find out a little bit of what the story was originally.

Mr Pricklepants! I’m glad to see him appear on the latest poster.

Although, hopefully Buttercup, Dolly and Trixie aren’t forgotten. Given the popularity of unicorns at the moment, I’m surprised that Buttercup isn’t getting a bigger merchandising push. Unless they’re worried about confusion with the unicorn plush from the Despicable Me films.

Well, Bonnie Hunt (Dolly) did recently confirm that she’s in the movie. And Kristen Schaal (Trixie) did too, but that was all the way back when it was first announced. Buttercup, I don’t know about, but I’d assume he is if the others are. The synopsis said all the toys go on the road trip, but I guess it’s just a matter of how big a role they each get to play in the adventure.

As far as marketing, I know they want to get Bo out there, to remind people about her since she’s been gone so long. And for some reason (I don’t quite comprehend) Ducky and Bunny are getting a huge push. I hope things eventually become a little more balanced in the promos.

It looks to me like the skunk may be another toy. It’s funny though, its silhoutte almost lines up perfectly with RC’s, I wonder. RC’s antenna also seems to be missing, not just here, but from the Loungefly backpack as well.

Good catch on RC’s antenna being missing! Although, out of curiosity, I did go back and look at past toys of him, and not all included the antenna. So it could mean something – like that he’s returning, and he’s lost it – or it could just be artistic license in the design.

I wonder if the skunk – since it’s made by the same company of the RCs – maybe just followed the same basic shape for ease in manufacture? It could turn out to be a toy, or since the clip showed the carnival to be set among the mountains/woods, it could be a real skunk that causes trouble for the toys.

Could be! Interestingly enough, that same skunk also appears to be among the diecast cars with minifigs from Mattel that you shared with us in an earlier post. The fact it’s depicted here alongside RC’s remote makes me certain it will be some sort of vehicle.

Now that we know about the skunk, I do see that now in the minifigs. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens with all these hinted vehicles!
